Tremont Street Music Hall

Review by: Janet

I will take the lead from Bryan and add some of my comments.

>Athenaeum started out the show at about 8:40pm and played until about 9:25 >or so. They were alright, and got the crowd pumped up. It could be because >they have a homefield advantage being from North Carolina.

I did recognize two of their songs. The rest of their stuff, as someone else posted from a previous show, all sounded the same and not too exciting. I said to Bryan and Brian, "Every time I heard them on the radio I thought they were the Gin Blossoms! Honestly!" Enough said. But they are local and seemed to have a fairly good fan base. I also noticed they appear to be *very* young, so maybe they will get better with maturity.

>They played almost all the new material within >the beginning two-thirds of the show.

They did most of DUTG and really didn't do much older stuff at all. I thought the new stuff sounded very good live. I was somewhat surprised they did "Lazy Eye". Some of the older songs included "Fallin' Down Again" and "There You Are"(yeah!).

>Robby had larengitis :( So he sung very few songs...but he did sing >Amigone and Full Forever :) He said, "I'll try and burp out a few >songs!"

Yeah, I was a little disappointed there were less Robby songs, but what can you do. He did sound OK on what he did sing, and I was happy "Full Forever" was one of them (yeah!). I thought perhaps he was a little under the weather since he was nowhere to be found after the show. Hope he drinks plenty of hot tea and chicken soup and recovers by tonight's show in DC.

(He plays the >beginning of Name) I kind of liked it, so I went to Rob and said, What do >you think of this? (Starts playing the beginning to Name) Rob said he liked >it and so we dicided to put it on an album.

I remember Robby said something to the effect of "Oh, that's real pretty, John!" Made me crack up.

Another funny moment: Some guy from the crowd got up onto the stage and jumped around (probably wanted to stage dive), and, of course, he was promptly thrown off by the bouncers. John jumped in, "Hey, that's my brother!".

Oh yes, he did get some stupid girl onstage to sing the very end of "Name". She was such an idiot and couldn't do it.

A cute moment: When John introduced the band, Mike just gives this shy smile, and you'd think he was blushing! It is sort of sweet. I think someone else mentioned this about a previous show.

>I also had the opportunity to meet Janet from the list. Very cool person. >Let me just say one thing.....she can get you to the front of the stage!

Thanks, Bryan. I had a good time, too, and I'll be damned since I traveled far I am going to get my money's worth! Plus I'm not afraid of people. True fear is defending your master's thesis or doctoral dissertation, so nobody intimidates me anymore.

That was another >thing, this was the TAMEST show I have ever been to. I don't know if it was >because their music has slowed down a little, or if it was because it >wasn't a Buffalo show. I can't answer that question because I have never >been to a goo show outside of Western NY....At a few points, the crowd >started to get going, but then slowed down again. All in all still a kick >ass show.

These people acted like they were in church!!! How can you not get excited when the Goos put on a high energy show? When we first got there, we were somehow in a section where all these cuddling couples were hanging out (I kid you not), so I REALLY had to move before I puked from all the sweetness. When we got to the front, we truly could not comprehend how people could be in the front rows at a general admission show and not expect to get jostled around a bit--I'm not talking a mosh pit by any stretch of the imagination. Plus, some of these people looked like they never left the 1970's, and *not* in a fashionable sort of way (pretty scary).

When I saw the Goos in Roanoke, VA on the Bush tour, the crowd was more into it. And, of course, I was close to the front so I would know. I lost one of my favorite earrings at that show! Now I don't wear any earrings to concerts anymore, or anything I value too much to lose or get spilled on.

Then after getting Mike to sign >autographs, we went outside were some poeple were waiting for John to sign >stuff. So Brian from the list, walks around the back of the bus and semi to >the Goo bus (Green one) and walks right up to the door. And out walks >Johnny. So we talked with him a little before the one bouncer says,

Kudos to Brian to figure this!

Believe it or not, I've never met any of the Goos even though I've been seeing them for years, hung out in the same scene for the most part, and even grew up in the Broadway neighborhood! I told John I was another Broadway graduate who moved onto a better life.

>The low part of the night: The 2.5 hour drive back to Raleigh! Got home at >3am and passed out, especially since I worked a half day and had to get up >at 6:15....

I also had a 2.5 hour ride back to Virginia. I thought about finding a hotel room since I had been up since 5:00 a.m., but I was too wound up from the show and wouldn't be able to sleep anyways.

Overall, it was a good show. I'm hoping they will come around again in a few months so I can take another road trip adventure!
