Subject: D.C. review - my two cents

Just wanted to add my comments to those already posted regarding last
Monday's show at the 9:30 Club in D.C...
First of all, good review by "Mario," whoever he may be. Thanks for writing
it; I was far too hungover to put a story together the following day... One
song missing from his set list was "Million Miles Away," which was the third
or fourth song they played, and which served notice that this was going to be
a real Goo show, not one of those 40 minute shows sandwiched between
pretender bands... We were ecstatic over the exuberance exhibited by the boys
during their set, and it was great to hear the old banter between Johnny and
Robby and with the audience between songs, and old favorites such as "Up
Yours," "Hey," and "There You Are." (And yes, they did play "We Are the
Normal," despite previous proclamations to never do so again.) Another
humorous highlight - At one point between songs, Johnny told the crowd that
they had a new song they wanted to try out on us. Then, after playing a few
lines of "Name," he stopped playing, laughed, looked at Robby, pointed
toward someone in the front and said in a mocking voice, "This guy out here
said, 'Hey, this song sounds just like Name.'"
I can't say enough about the sound. One of my criticisms of the 9:30 Club in
moving to a new location is that it's lost a lot in intimacy and acoustics.
The Goos however, sounded fantastic. The vocals were sharp, the solos were
crisp, and the instruments sounded better than ever, and ALL WITHOUT THE HELP
OF ANY UNNECESSARY SECOND GUITARIST...and Mike is great, too...
To all the older fans - don't miss them this time around. They had all the
energy of the old club sets and have adeptly found a balance to appease both
old and new fans that not many bands have been able to. And they were very
nice after the show, taking time out to sign autographs and joke with people.
Johnny even jumped up on a ledge to give a kiss to a girl I was with who
told him that she just got engaged. They hung out into the morning hours,
even though they had to travel to a show the following night...
As "Mario" said, "Nothing beats a Goo Goo Dolls show." That's my two cents,
and that's why they are the Goos!!!
