Perry Ferrel disses the Goo Goo Dolls Subject: Goo on MTV pawlikmc@nacadem.sunyerie.edu wrote: > the goos will be playing on mtv sometime in the next two weeks for > their spring break series.dont know when, dont know why,and dont know > where, but they will be on the ole boob tube.so if any of you 24 hour > a day mtv people know some more info, let us know. I'm no 24-hour-a-day MTV person, but I noticed in TV GUIDE that the Goo Goo Dolls (and Bush :( ) are supposed to be on "Spring Break Rocks" next Friday night at 11:30 CST. I'll watch, but quite frankly I wish they'd "Just Say No" to MTV's spring break idiocy. Speaking of idiocy, here's a little exchange between the incredibly overrated Perry Farrell and his little worshipper Bob Guiccone Jr. in this month's SPIN: Guccione: "A lot of alternative rock seems self-conscious to me, as if the artists are like deer frozen in the headlights. Why does a band like the Goo Goo Dolls, for instance, look like they have the weight of the world on their shoulders?" Farrell: "Let's talk about that for a moment: This is a very, very mediocre band. Is it the kids pulling, or is somebody pushing? Believe me, I'm sure the Goo Goo Dolls haven't done that much to our psyche that there's that much of a demand for them. Somebody is pushing that up their ass to make a dollar. Then they'll pull it back out of somebody's ass and throw it in the garbage." My comments: first, be careful wading through those pronouns. Second, "mediocre bands" come in many flavors, which is why I walked out on Jane's Addiction at Lollapalooza oh so many years ago. (And Porno for Pyros, well, there's a work of genius for you.) Third, and most importantly, I find it very sad that an honest band playing well-written, hook-filled melodic rock is maligned the way the Goo Goo Dolls increasingly seem to be in the press. I'm sick of "alternative rock" meaning lousy, hipster attempts at shock value. I want SONGS, ones that mean something, and that's why we need bands like the Goo Goo Dolls. BTW, I also hope the Goo Goo Dolls do *not* play Lollapalooza. It's not about music anymore, and the Goo Goo Dolls are. That's more than my two cents . . .
