In June of 1982, a long haired Industrial Arts major named Robby Takac
left East Senior for the last time as a student. He went off to college where
his life would change forever.
It was in college where he met Johnny Rzeznik and George. After
several unsuccessful bands, they joined forces to create The Sex Maggots. They
kept this name for a while and played area clubs. They made such a big impact
on the ceilings of these clubs that they were soon banned from playing them.
If they wanted to continue playing in the Buffalo area, they would have to
change their name.
One day, while Robby and Johnny were through True Detective Magazine,
the found an ad for a Goo Goo Doll. That's it they thought. And since that
day that's what they called themselves, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Robby Takac
became Robby Goo.
It's been 10 years since Robby graduated from East, he may look the
same, he still has the hair, but his life is definitely not the same. The
Goo's have released 4 albums, their self-titled debut album, Jed, Hold Me Up, &
Superstar Car. They played various venues around the country, from the
famous CBGB's in NY, to Messey Hall in Toronto, to the Connecticut Street Armory
in Buffalo. They have gone on nation wide tours opening for such groups as the
Replacements and Soul Asylum. They have also become a rather hot item on MTV's
alternative shows, Alternative Nation and 120 Minutes, in which they appear as
guests during April.
Their newest album, Superstar Car, hit the top 10 of the
College/Alternative record charts for several weeks in a row. The title for
their album came from a car wash with the same name on William Street in
Buffalo. The Doll's frequently went by the business and became fascinated with
it. Then when it came time to name their new album, they thought it was the
perfect name.
Staying close to their roots is something the Goo's strive to do. When
Robby's not on tour you'll find him in the area, usually working at
Trackmaster Audio, a place where he has worked for years.
